Completely Disturbing and Inexcusable

Aftermath of U.S. strikes in southern Iran

Multiple U.S. missiles rained down in the small Iranian town of Kuhestak, resulting in at least 5 civilian deaths and nearly 70 injuries. Reporting is a bit inconsistent at the moment, but 4 people have been confirmed killed when a U.S. missile struck a home and demolished the roof where a wedding was being held. Two women and two children were killed. A fifth individual, a teenager, was reportedly killed by U.S. munitions that destroyed a telecommunications tower that was being targeted.

The U.S. military is currently investigating reports. The same military that is conducting investigations that somehow still remain inconclusive over the Minab school strike. This is despite the overwhelming evidence that it was a U.S. Tomahawk missile that directly hit the all-girls elementary school, which killed at least 175 people - the overwhelming majority being children. Several weapons experts have determined that these latest missile strikes that directly hit civilian homes were not a ricochet from Iranian defense weapons and appear to have been accidental. Which, putting aside the entirely unjustified war we are waging, is inexcusable if you want to justify a trillion-dollar-plus defense budget. One civilian injury is inexcusable, let alone 2,000 Iranian civilian casualties.

There is an obvious lack of preparation before carrying out these targeted strikes. This is no surprise given the “leadership” we have who do not care about war crimes, Iranian civilians, or Iranian civilian infrastructure. They are firing entirely from the hip, cleaning up the mess later, and facing no accountability from the international community. Lather, rinse, repeat. It is clear who the “terrorists and terror states” are in the Middle East. It is not Iran; it is the United States, and it is Israel. This has been the case for decades.

Even the premise of this mission, which the Pentagon claims was to target and destroy a telecommunications tower in the town, is in and of itself a war crime. Iranian state media explain that the tower was for civilian use, not military use. The U.S. and Israel have repeatedly struck civilian infrastructure, including oil refineries, homes, apartment buildings, schools, radar sites, highways, bridges, hospitals, water filtering plants, and local airports throughout the course of this engagement. You get the picture: just about every possible piece of civilian infrastructure has been either intentionally or accidentally targeted and struck in these now nearly seven months.

Let’s be realistic here too: it is intentional. As I previously mentioned, Israel clearly does not care about war crimes, nor do Pete Hegseth and Donald Trump. This is a crusade against “jihadists” for Hegseth, and, simply put, in the case of Donald Trump, he does not care in the slightest about not only the Geneva Convention and the international community, but also this war itself. This war is appalling on every level. United States intervention and diplomacy have been horrific since the end of the Second World War - and even before that, it was far from peachy clean. We desperately need new leadership in both parties. That leadership and anti-war hawkishness are certainly not coming from Republicans. Wars like this have been their calling card since the 1950’s. So it will really take a new era of farther-left Democratic leadership to withdraw all aid - especially military aid - from Israel, and to stop launching these forever wars. No more quagmires, no more dollars wasted, no more human suffering, pain, and loss.
