Ilhan Omar’s Home Raided by Federal Agents
Just the latest strong-arming by this administration

HSI (Homeland Security Investigations) raided Congresswoman Ilhan Omar's home on Monday. Omar and her immediate family members were subpoenaed just days before the raid, during which her apartment was searched and her phone was seized by federal agents. This stems from alleged discrepancies in Omar and her family’s immigration paperwork from the 1990s. I have been waiting to write about this, as few details have been released so far about the investigation, which judge signed off on it, or what the DOJ is even looking for.
It is all a political stunt by this administration and functions as yet another example of the authoritarianism of this regime. The timing of the raid is incredibly unusual, coming just weeks before the midterm elections. The Justice Department typically does not carry out major investigations or take major action within 60 days of an election. Representative Omar checks many boxes that this administration would find problematic. She is a woman in a position of power, which is threatening to Republicans; she is a person of color; she is an immigrant; she is Muslim, and she is progressive. An admirable and vocal one at that, as deputy chair of the progressive caucus. She is everything that terrifies Donald Trump and Conservatives.
This is also a distraction for Republicans right now. This all aims to please the MAGA base, as they can be excited that this regime is going after a vocal dissident and person on the left. Trump may have failed to deliver the Epstein Files, but he will give them this crumb. A crumb that I think will go nowhere. Ilhan immigrated to the United States from Somalia in 1995 at age 12 and was naturalized in 2000. She has strongly denied any wrongdoing and has the people of Minnesota behind her. The Justice Department would have to prove clear discrepancies in her immigration files and still file a separate motion to challenge her citizenship and attempt to denaturalize her. I find that extremely improbable, given the exhaustive process and the fact that this administration is losing power. There is very little to gain here. If there were real issues, they would have been addressed years ago, when she was first elected to Congress. She has plenty of support in this blatant abuse of power. It is exactly what fascist governments do - they use their positions of power to weaponize agencies to target and remove political enemies.
Donald Trump claims he knows nothing about this, but that is an obvious lie. He told his supporters at a rally in Ohio, “I don’t know what they’re doing with it, but I can tell you this: She’s a disaster. She comes in from a country without laws, without police, without military, where all they do is shoot each other, and she comes into our country, and she says, ‘I have a constitutional right.’” Aside from disparaging and false comments about Somalia, Donald Trump displays his ignorance of the Constitution again on multiple fronts. Of course, she has a constitutional right to “complain” via freedom of speech under the First Amendment. She is also protected by due process under the Fourteenth and Fifth Amendments, so they cannot remove her from the country for saying things the president doesn't like. I mention this only because the crowd at this rally chanted “deport” following these comments made by Trump. She is not going anywhere.
