A personal slush fund with no oversight and no transparency has emerged as Trump’s lawyers drop lawsuit against the IRS.

At this point, I expect to copy and paste this headline monthly until this term expires. The Trump administration has truly outperformed itself here. Not only have they swindled $1.7 billion of taxpayer money, your money, into an apparent slush fund, but they also achieved this by dropping an unprecedented lawsuit that was ongoing by Donald Trump personally against the IRS. The IRS that he oversees. I truly cannot believe I am writing these words right now. This makes Watergate look like a slow-pitch softball game. This makes the Teapot Dome look like a Sunday afternoon cruise with the top down in a convertible.

This all began with Donald Trump’s lawsuit against the IRS over the leaking of his tax returns by a former IRS contractor. Those leaked tax records showed that Trump paid little to no income tax for several years. Following the leaks of the tax returns, the former contractor was sentenced to five years in prison. Trump initiated a $10 billion lawsuit against the Internal Revenue Service in January. No other sitting U.S. president has sued any government agency while actively in office. This is an egregious conflict of interest, as the Executive Branch directs a large portion of government agencies.

To paint the full picture for you, we had Donald Trump’s personal lawyers pursuing an active lawsuit on behalf of Trump’s private financial interests against the IRS, an agency Donald Trump oversees, in conjunction with the Justice Department, which Donald Trump also oversees, who then settled on the $1.776 billion payout. This payout is coming from the Judgment Fund within the U.S. Treasury. Again, all of this is taxpayer dollars. The $1.776 billion fund amount is a nod to the 1776 establishment of the United States. Of course, this absolutely absurd lawsuit and settlement is exactly what the Founding Fathers envisioned when establishing our country.

Acting Attorney General Todd Blanch, Trump’s former personal lawyer, orchestrated the settlement. Donald Trump, earlier today, claimed he knows “very little” about the creation of this fund. Right. And I’m the king of England. You mean to tell me Donald Trump has no insight into the merits of a lawsuit against the IRS, which both his personal lawyers and the DOJ are involved in? As a third reminder, Donald Trump oversees all of these parties involved. The $1.7 billion settlement is being used as an Anti-Weaponization fund, and Todd Blanch is to appoint a handful of members to oversee the disbursement of funds.

The Anti-Weaponization fund is being used to allocate compensation for claims of “weaponized” political grievances by Trump allies. Yes, this includes the January 6th insurrectionists who were all universally pardoned by President Trump last year. The same people who attempted to overthrow the United States government in 2021 at the behest of Donald Trump will now be getting our taxpayer money.  This fund has no public input, no congressional oversight at the moment, and no transparency. This is an absolute travesty against our democracy.
