ICE Is Out of Control Part II

We need Nuremberg-style trials for agency heads and officers when this administration concludes

A third individual has been killed in an ICE encounter. Three people are now dead due to immigration enforcement in just one week. One week. An unidentified 28-year-old Florida man was killed after being struck by a tractor-trailer while fleeing on foot from ICE agents following an attempted intercept at a gas station this morning. Three other people fled on foot as well; however, we have few details about their whereabouts, the attempted arrests, and whether they were detained. 

All ICE brings to communities is chaos, intimidation, fear, and oppression. They are a mostly under-trained force that faces no accountability, has an overinflated budget, is lawless, serves no realistic purpose, and operates in a shoot-to-kill mode. This is at least the third instance of an individual being struck and killed by a vehicle while fleeing on foot from ICE since the second Trump administration. 

We will see more of this. For the people ICE is attempting to detain, their options are: be shot, killed, and drug out of your vehicle; be separated from your kids, spouse, family, neighbors, and detained in facilities with appalling conditions and be subject to mental, physical, and sexual abuse; or be deported to, in some instances, a country that is not of your origin. It is quite clear why people choose to flee. They have seen what happens when they comply and what happens when they resist. And by resist, I mean flee their brown-shirt pursuers. You would think that, for all of the rhetoric surrounding the “undocumented immigrant invasion of rapists, drug lords, and gang members”, there would be tons of ICE agents laying it all out in the line of duty every single day. There would be reports of massive shootouts, paraphernalia recovery, and even ICE agents being shot and killed in the line of duty. Yeah, no. There has not been a single agent killed while attempting to carry out their duties. 

None of this administration’s narrative sticks. There are no large waves of mass-criminal thugs roaming our streets. Other countries are not “emptying out their insane asylums” into our country. The people exercising their First Amendment right by peacefully protesting are not domestic terrorists. There are not 30 million undocumented immigrants in the country. The 3,000 deportations or detentions per day is completely arbitrary and unrealistic. 

The only thing that sticks are the faces and names of the victims of this Gestapo force. The only thing that sticks are the responses of the communities that have been invaded, and their ability to stand in solidarity to protect their neighbors and speak out against the murder of Americans in the streets of our cities and towns. I say Americans, including the immigrants who have been murdered by ICE as well. As long as you exist peacefully within our borders, you are an American to me. You always will be. I do not care what any administration, Democratic or Republican, has to say. I will not allow politicians to posture on behalf of the lives of the immigrants who risk or vastly alter their lives to come here and make this country great. Politicians will not use your movement, adaptability, and perseverance to capture ballots come election time to either keep the unrealistic pathway to citizenship status quo, like the establishment Democrats have done for decades, or to brutalize, violate, criminalize, demonize, and isolate our borders the way the Republicans have done for decades. The fascism of the Trump administration will not and cannot win.
