Yet another individual has been shot and killed by an ICE agent

A second man has been killed by ICE in the span of one week. This time, in Maine, a 26-year-old Colombian man who was on his way to work this morning was pursued by ICE and shot by a federal agent. He was authorized to work in the U.S. and was issued a Social Security number. In an eerily similar shooting to that from last week in Houston of Lorenzo Araujo, ICE agents pursued this vehicle, rammed it several times, claimed that the operator attempted to weaponize the vehicle, shot and killed the driver, had no body-cam or dash-cam footage available, and did not have a warrant for this individual. This man was not the target of ICE, just as Araujo was not the target last week. From reports I have read so far, a family friend has potentially identified the victim as Joan Sebastian Guerrero, a husband and father of three.

I am getting really tired of having to practically copy and paste the same title. It has been only a matter of days since I wrote a piece calling for ICE to be abolished, yet here we are again with Trump and Stephen Miller’s Gestapo quite literally getting away with murder. I am going to pose the same questions once more:

“How many more people are going to be held in concentration camp-esque detention facilities and be abused - sexually, physically, and mentally - by the guards and agents? How many more families are going to be separated, many of whom may never see their children or grandchildren again? How many more individuals will be deported to countries not of their origin? How many more of our cities will be invaded by a paramilitary force? How much more pain, suffering, injury, trauma, and death must our immigrant population endure for the heinous crime of not having the correct paperwork? Entering the United States illegally is a civil violation, just as parking your car illegally or jaywalking is. Do these punishments fit the crime? Not even remotely close.

As a husband and father close to this man’s age, this line from a resident near where the shooting took place in Biddeford absolutely pains me: “I watched a wife fall to her knees looking at her husband’s dead body on the ground. I watched a little girl crying with a little pink backpack on because she’s never going to see her father again.” This is not America. How far have we fallen in the wake of a white nationalist, isolationist political movement? All in the name of a political party that is completely subservient to enriching corporations and hoisting our capitalist system that is teetering on full-blown plutocracy. Their response in their mission to tear down the fabric of our democracy and ensure the wealthiest individuals of that plutocracy enjoy the most amount of spoils is to fabricate a “dangerous and destructive invasion” by “illegals” as a direct threat to our ways of life and our economic interests. A fabrication not backed by empirical evidence and has left blood on the streets of our country of both U.S. citizens and immigrants.

This will not be the last time this happens in this administration. Anyone who is still in favor of what ICE and this administration are doing, I really want you to stop and think about what you are gaining from this. Is the GDP any greater? Is inflation any lower? Has wealth inequality decreased? Have wages started to creep up to keep pace with productivity? Has the housing crisis subsided? Has the availability of housing stock vastly improved? Have interest rates decreased? Has unemployment, which was already at its lowest point in over 50 years under the Biden administration, gone down any further? Has crime, violent and nonviolent, which again has been trending downwards for decades, dramatically decreased? All of the answers are no, and in exchange we have dead mothers and fathers all across America by a DHS and a Republican administration asking you - no, demanding you- to comply or die. I could not think of anything more un-American.
