Zohran Mamdani has turned New York into a socialist, communist, Marxist wasteland in the most obscene way possible. It breaks my heart to say this, but he has asked New Yorkers to turn off lights and other electrical appliances they are not using and to set their air conditioners to 78 degrees to avoid overwhelming the power grid as the city faces a record heat wave. What a madman out of his ever-loving mind! Clearly, socialism and communism (because apparently to right-wingers those words are interchangeable) are failing millions of New Yorkers, and the country should take notice. It is failing so badly that Democratic Socialists keep winning elections all over the country by sizeable margins.
Obviously, I am being sarcastic about Mayor Mamdani turning New York City into a wasteland and that socialism is a failing system. Mamdani is my mayor, even though I live 12 hours away. Zohran is definitely the most captivating and exciting political figure in my lifetime, and I am so excited to see what he has created across the country. He has inspired tens of millions of people to get behind him and create a momentous, seismic shift that the Democratic Party desperately needs. He has inspired hundreds, if not thousands, of progressives, social democrats, and democratic socialists to run for office to combat status quo counterparts. The GOP and moderate Democrats should take note, especially Democrats. Either listen to the voting base, or get out of the way this November.
Anyways, back to the horrors of a mayor requesting their citizens conserve energy in an intelligent manner. What is this world coming to? Mamdani’s ask of conserving electricity, which we should all be complicit in doing anyway, and a 78-degree A/C temperature setting is not some arbitrary number. The Department of Energy has recommended that people set their thermostats between 75 and 78 degrees for decades now. Incidentally, as of this writing, the Department of Energy has removed this suggestion and other energy conservation methods from its homepage.
Fascinating timing, considering this information removal happened immediately following Mamdani’s social media post. So, you are telling me that socialism still has a chance? The Department of Energy has been a socialist sleeper cell for four decades?!
Several GOP members also slammed Mamdani for this plea:
Former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley posted on Twitter, “Welcome to socialism”. Vivek Ramaswamy, a Republican running for governor in Ohio, wrote, “This is what socialism looks like, folks. The right answer isn’t restrictions or mandates. It’s drilling, fracking, coal, and nuclear.” Ironically enough drilling, fracking, and coal usage are massive contributors to man-made climate change which in turn is creating dangerous and deadly heat waves such as the one we are currently experiencing, but I digress. Sorry for being pedantic. Ted Cruz, a Texas senator, posted, “In a first-world country, you could turn on the A/C.” Just to be clear, in Cancun Cruz’s state, past Texas leaders had made the exact same types of requests to their citizens as Mamadani just did. The states of Ohio and South Carolina have also made suggestions to their residents to conserve energy. I am inclined to believe that Cruz, Ramaswamy, and Haley would not view that as socialism or as a “third-world country” type of behavior.
These GOP lawmakers, candidates, and influencers have no answer for the DSA wave that is taking the country by storm. They cannot taunt the policy platforms because the vast majority of the platforms are immensely popular positions that most Americans could get behind when they are not being propagandized by star-spangled awesome capitalism and Americanism. When right-wing news outlets cry communism and socialism for fifty straight years, those words lose the fear-mongering power they once had. When every single Democratic candidate who is in favor of Medicare for all, sanctions on and withdrawal of support for Israel, taxing billionaires out of existence, or at the very least a marginally acceptable rate, subsidized childcare, and subsidized public university are labeled as terrifying bogeymen and women who are sought to destroy your way of life, it loses its luster. Calling Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton communists for two decades when they have quite literally zero communist policy positions or beliefs is not going to be an effective argument for two-thirds of the country. It may work on sixty-plus-year-olds who watch Fox News on cable TV every day, but that is not a base large enough to halt this movement. People are fed up and want fair government and an equitable economy. Labeling every Democrat a socialist and then clogging up the news with critiques of energy conservation, which indisputably saves lives, by a DSA mayor will not cut it.
