The most expensive House primary reaches an unfortunate conclusion.

Donald Trump has removed a massive thorn in his side as his endorsed candidate, Ed Gallrein, has won Thomas Massie’s seat in the 4th district of Kentucky. This primary proved to be the most expensive in U.S. history, with over $30 million spent on advertising. The AIPAC lobby (America-Israel Public Affairs Committee) expended $15 million dollars to back Ed Gallrein, who will take over Massie’s slot in the House at year's end.

I am by no means a Thomas Massie fan, as his libertarian views are completely antithetical to my beliefs on government. However, I can commend him on being perhaps the last true conservative in the Trump era with any spine. He is one of a select few who have broken off the party line as well, especially in this second Trump administration. He had enough sense to vote against the Republican reconciliation bill last July. A bill that will see the largest upward transfer of wealth from the bottom to the top in our country’s history. Massie has criticized the President’s war in Iran and also aided in delivering the Epstein Transparency Act, which mandated the Department of Justice to publicly release unclassified documents surrounding sex offender and human trafficker Jeffrey Epstein. I cannot imagine why Donald Trump would want someone like Massie out of the picture. He and Democratic Congressman Ro Khanna have courageously led a bipartisan effort to unveil these files, expose the Epstein class, and attempt to deliver justice to the victims. Again, something I laud Massie for.

Massie’s primary loss in Kentucky really demonstrates how deep the AIPAC lobby’s fangs are embedded in our politics and how much control Donald Trump still maintains over the GOP. Despite record-low approval ratings, practically the entire Republican Party remains in capitulation to him. Thomas Massie’s loss in the House, as well as the Trump-endorsed candidates who won five of seven statehouse elections in Indiana, demonstrate this.

However, the record spending in Kentucky should serve as a caution to Republican lawmakers, as this was a safe, red seat. It took this level of advertising and AIPAC spending to get another Trump sycophant elected. Once Donald Trump is gone, the Republican Party is going to be scrambling for a clear vision for the future. As the midterms approach and the President’s approval continues to tank, this seat won't be enough to save Republicans in what is predicted to be a blue wave and massive Democratic pick-ups this November.
