As the Supreme Court wraps up its annual term, we have seen a flurry of rulings this week (as expected). We have rulings as follows:
Monday, June 29, 2026:
Trump loses his appeal in the E. Jean Carroll case, where he will have to pay out $5 million.
Mail-in ballots delivered after election day, as long as they are postmarked before the election deadline, will still count.
Donald Trump cannot fire Federal Reserve board member Lisa Cook.
The President may fire the heads of independent agencies at will.
Today, June 30, 2026:
Birthright citizenship:
Today, in a narrow 6-3 ruling, birthright citizenship is upheld. At least for now. The fact that 3 justices could rule against the clear, plain language of the 14th Amendment of the Constitution is astounding. The 14th Amendment guarantees citizenship to anyone born on U.S. soil and in most U.S. territories. At the very beginning of his term, Donald Trump attempted to usurp the Constitution with an executive order to end birthright citizenship, which he does not have the power to do. It was one of many assaults against the immigrant community in the past year and a half as the Trump regime attempts to rewrite who is American.
This administration has been draconian in its efforts to restrict individuals seeking asylum and access to temporary protected status. Had the Supreme Court ruled against birthright citizenship, roughly a quarter of a million children would be stateless each year. Clearly that is unacceptable. Let’s not forget the roots of the 14th Amendment; It was ratified following the Civil War to guarantee citizenship to recently freed African slaves and to nullify the discriminatory “Black Codes” in the former Confederate South.
Supreme Court upholds ban on transgender athletes from participating in school sports
This is the only federal court decision that has not gone our way (if you are on the left). The Supreme Court upholds West Virginia and Idaho’s ban on transgender girls and women from competing in women’s sports, 6-3. There are 25 other states with similar bans, which will most likely also be protected under this ruling. Donald Trump, of course, celebrated this ruling, stating on Truth Social, “BIG WIN: The United States Supreme Court just RULED AGAINST MEN PLAYING IN WOMEN’S SPORTS”. The man sure loves his capital letters.
This ruling stems from another early Trump executive order, which banned transgender athletes from competing in women's sports. You know, the crux of the issues plaguing this country. The real meat and potatoes of what we needed, if you will. Not wealth inequality, social inequities, cost of living, or an oligarchy; it’s the damn 1% of the population in the form of transgender people simply existing within our borders acting as an anchor on progress. Mind you, of the 510,000 collegiate athletes, 10 identify as transgender for a whopping .000019% of NCAA competitors. With an even larger pool of athletes at the high school level, still transgender athletes make up a fraction of a percentage point.
On a more serious note, around 40% of transgender youth and adults have attempted to commit suicide at one point in their life. I cannot imagine what the social stigma and state laws such as these do to a person. Especially when it is one of the main agendas of the fascistic movement of an entire political party in this country and a portion of the other. It is truly heartbreaking. And to now not allow them to compete in sports among their peers? Give me a fucking break. It’s sports. It’s entertainment. The world spins up larger issues to tackle than a transgender high school athlete wanting to compete in track and field with their friends.
