Elon Musk is Insane

And incredibly racist. No surprises here.

Elon Musk is painfully unfunny, woefully misinformed, immensely dangerous with the wealth and influence he has amassed, and is a perfect case study of how stupid, out of touch, and simple-minded a large majority of the billionaire and multi-millionaire class are. A large portion of these individuals have accrued their wealth by getting extremely lucky or by being beneficiaries of generational wealth; they have not earned it with wits and creativity. It is all based on timing, nepotism, sound investments, and maybe one area of expertise. I want to make as many people aware as possible that people like Elon Musk are not geniuses on a different level than you and I are. These are people who have endless trunks of money and influence who are just out here speculating and espousing insane rhetoric. I see people in my local town Facebook group reiterating the same nonsense Musk is; they just don’t have the number of zeros in their bank account that he does. We must stop putting these absurdly wealthy people on a higher pedestal.
Case in point: Elon Musk was recently interviewed by Zanny Minton Beddoes of The Economist, and my word, was it a brutal watch. This is by no means an endorsement of Beddoes or The Economist; I just wanted to highlight a few segments to show the enigma that Musk is. I will give Beddoes some credit as she at least counters his arguments throughout the interview and actually holds his feet to the fire with some of her direct questions. This was not a softball interview like so many of us are accustomed to by American journalists and media, but that is more on the fault of mainstream conglomerates than the actual journalists in most instances.
Just a quick transcription styling note as well: I quoted verbatim from both Musk and Beddoes, and I left in all of Musk’s stuttering and fumbling of words. I did that for two reasons: one, to highlight the intelligence disparity between the two parties, as Beddoes was confident and prepared; and two, there are moments when Musk is very uncomfortable in his answers when asked about his racism and Islamophobia. I will obviously share my thoughts on Musk’s responses as well.
1) On AI and the future of the economy:
Musk: “Money won’t matter in 2036.”
Zanny Beddoes, editor-in-chief, The Economist: “I’m not sure that the people who bought your shares think that money won’t matter in 2036.”
Musk: “Well, what do you want money for? You want money for goods and services. You want money for obviously food, housing, transport, entertainment…Well, if that is so abundant that there’s more…that the robots and AI are providing more goods and services than any human could possibly consume, what do you need money for in that case?
Zanny Beddoes: “Let’s agree that could be where we end up. I’m concerned about the road. And we live in democracies, and people are very worried about this. So, I guess two questions: Firstly, do you have to have massive redistribution from people like you to the people who are losing their jobs? Do you need to pay more tax? Do you have much higher taxes on capital so that you fund some kind of universal income? Otherwise, what do people live off?
Musk: “I think the Treasury should just simply issue people checks.”
Zanny Beddoes: “But where’s the revenue coming from? I’m enough of an economist, if you just issue checks you’re going to have inflation.”
Musk: “A lot of what we’re trying to think about is, these things were relevant in the past, they will not be relevant in the future…”
Elon then goes on a ramble about inflation and deflation, and it goes nowhere before the next questions. The level of delusion, and again the sheer out-of-touch-with-society nature of this man, and the growing number of people like him, is alarming to say the least. These ultra-wealthy members of our society have serious problems. I think their obsession with accruing more and more capital and assets is a mental illness. It leaves them so disconnected from reality and desperate for admiration from working-class people that they will never receive. In response, they take it out on us to keep their circle in immeasurable power and influence by purchasing so many of our politicians and by exerting massive control over our day-to-day life. I often wonder what their endgame is. It is our labor and our currency that enable their wealth and control. When we get to the point where almost no common person can afford to function and quite literally survive in late-stage capitalism, I am unsure what they gain from that.
Where I know they are trying to herd us is in the direction of a technofeudal fascist country. That fascism comes out in the form of racial purity, zero immigration, the removal of any “other” member of society, an oligarchic form of governance, and state control with boundless nationalism. Technofeudalism is a feudal system in which we, the working class, are hierarchically ranked based on whatever individual wealth we are fortunate enough to have, and we are completely subservient to a select number of corporate overlords, i.e., Amazon, Apple, Disney, and Meta.
It is a dark path, and the path that a literal trillionaire (for a brief moment) lays out with the direction he hopes AI takes us. Musk weirdly has a full-circle communist moment, though, by suggesting mandated, direct-issue paychecks from the government for people who have been vagabonded due to AI’s advancement. Which, I think, and I hope, we have incredibly strict constraints on AI. It is a necessity for humanity's sake. I mean, we are currently rapidly funding and creating the very technology so many dystopian novels and films alluded to in my childhood and for decades about “robots replacing and wiping out humans”. There’s a way to eliminate that potential, and it is simple. Don’t create and embolden it. Don’t limitlessly expand the creation and implementation of AI. The AI bubble is largely what the stock market consists of right now. We are at a pinnacle point. These upcoming midterms could not be more important. I know this is said practically every election cycle, but this is different. Our democracy as we know it is on the line here. Our very way of life is.
Also, the “money won’t matter in 2036” line is absurd. Whether it's a sizeably subsidized workforce or not, tell that to a family of four trying to sustain a dignified life right now. Tell them that money will not matter in a decade as they try to make ends meet, as they live paycheck to paycheck where a surprise medical emergency, unexpected loss of employment, or sudden vehicle breakdown could lead to bankruptcy, foreclosure, or homelessness. There is a reason taxing billionaires is such a popular position. When you show Americans what wealth disparity looks like and what the K-shaped economy is, they know who the enemy is and which way to vote.
2) On DOGE,
Musk: “I think, I think I got a little too involved in politics, got carried away, frankly. I got a lot of flak from this, for this, obviously. But the people don’t understand just how simple it was for the DOGE team to approve payments.”
I will not go too much on this as I have an upcoming project that will take a deeper dive into DOGE and the agencies it cut, but yeah, you think, Elon? Maybe having the wealthiest man in the world usurp Congress, gain access to sensitive government and individual data, and have essentially unilateral control over a large portion of the federal budget was a bad idea and a little toxic to his brand.
Please, someone, get this man as far away from politics as possible. For him to tell consistent lies about government spending and Social Security, break laws like the Privacy Act, the Impoundment Control Act, and the Appointments Clause, and to get over a dozen inspectors general fired from the IRS deservedly brought some flak to him. It should have brought him handcuffs and a prison sentence, but why expect accountability from this administration? Trump would just pardon him anyway. Besides, people like Musk are exactly the type the fascist Trump regime embodies and glorifies.
3) On racism,
Zanny Bedoes: “People say that you’re a racist; what is the motivation for doing that? Are you fomenting this?”
Musk: “My partner is, she’s half-Indian, and I have four children with her. One of them was named after a famous Indian physicist. So I would say I’m not racist. Also, if you look at the people employed at my companies, we have senior executives of all races. I don’t think there’s any racism there.”
All I heard when Elon responded this way was, “See, I’m not racist…I have a (insert race here) friend.” This is absurd. For years now, Elon Musk has been publicly stating and posting on Twitter that white people are a “rapidly diminishing minority,” which is just nonsense, suggesting that Europe is becoming a “hell-hole of immigrants,” that immigration will destroy places like Britain, and he consistently pushes and is a firm believer in the great replacement theory. It is hard to believe some people think he is racist; it's a real head-scratcher there.
4) On Muslims,
Zanny Beddoes: “Are you anti-Muslim?”
Musk: “Um, I’m against, uh, having, if people are coming to a country with antithetical views, um, I, I am against that. I’m against the, you know, I’m against, um, I, I’m against rape and murder. I’m against, uh, the imposition of rules and laws that are contrary to what we’ve come to accept in the West. And I think it’s a crying shame that the sort of traditional media like you don’t recognize this.”
This is just so disgusting. The tripping over his words and carefully constructing his racism with one trope after another says everything you need to know about this man. I hardly want to give this the time of day. I would love to hear him explain exactly what imposition against the rules and laws against “the West” are being instilled by Muslim populations. I would love to hear him explain what “the West” means to him. I think he would give very different answers than most of us reading this. He tries to pull the “fake news” media schtick that Trump does, but Musk just comes across as whiny and fragile.
Just to be clear as well, in the United States and in the UK (another region Musk thinks Muslims are taking over at a whopping 6% of the population), rape and murder convictions are the highest among white individuals. Not trying to conflate white individuals versus the Muslim population and their religion, but no global or country-level database keeps records in the way Musk is suggesting these violent crimes are being perpetrated by Muslim immigrants. A large portion of the world is just not as oxygen-deprived as Musk is. If Elon ever finds a way to successfully land on Mars, can we just keep him there? Like forever? Do you promise?
