Donald Trump is Remarkably Dumb…

Or should I say “dum”?

I think this is something we are all well aware of at this point. The man obsessed with magnets, windmills, and toilet water pressure does not exactly shine as a beacon of intelligence, but he somehow finds a way to reach lower depths. We may be getting close to bedrock. There are a few things I want to point out in this bizarre Truth Social post Donald Trump made yesterday morning following primary races in Arizona. To be clear, I am writing this in all caps to match verbatim what the president wrote. This is not a stylistic choice by me…(this is so humiliating)

“MAGA CANDIDATES WON EVERYTHING LAST NIGHT IN ARIZONA, A COMPLETE SWEEP!!! I WON ARIZONA 18 MONTHS AGO. THE DUMOCRATS ARE DUMBFOUNDED. AFTER DECADES, ARIZONA IS BECOMING A REPUBLICAN STATE. CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL! President DONALD J. TRUMP.”

First of all, yikes. The man was clearly excited here, posting everything in capital letters - even his name. Everything except the word “president,” which is just a bizarre choice. Maybe his Trump Mobile phone was glitching out. He must have the prototype fired up. Somebody, please take it away from him.

Secondly, it really bothers me the way he spells “dumocrats”. I do not really care about the kindergarten-level insult; I care more about the grammar. As a very amateur writer myself, it irks me. You are the president, for god’s sake; at least put some effort into this. “Dumocrats” sounds like a really, really terrible off-brand ‘Superman’ comic villain, or like gumbo. Now I am hungry.

If we are thinking critically here, it would be “dumbocrat”, not “dumocrat”. There is a “b” in dumb, at least last time I checked. What is fascinating is that he spells “dumbfounded” correctly, but two words before that he misspells his favorite new nickname. What is even more fascinating is that he just discovered that dumb has a “b” in it. I have spent an unfortunate, painstakingly, second-hand-embarrassingly long enough time listening to Trump speak, and he has this sort of weird linguistic tick. When he uses the phrases “many people don’t know about this” or “many people don’t know this, but…” it means he just learned about whatever nonsense he is spewing within the last few days - or even hours before making a claim. I really do hate to keep using this film reference, but this 2nd Trump administration reminds me too much of ‘Idiocracy'. Terry Cruise for president next, I guess?

This “dumocrat” insult has an even more lame and boring backstory than you think. During an event in New York a few months ago, Donald Trump was criticizing Hakeem Jeffries and Democrats (see, the correct spelling) and explained the genius origins of his master joke. (Two Donald Trump quotes in one piece…I feel like I need to take a long shower after this.)

“I was thinking about this character we have in the House. His name is Hakeem Jeffries. And he’s a low IQ person, very low IQ. And I watched what he was saying and what the horrible things he was saying, and I said, ‘He’s a dumb guy.’ I said, ‘Wait a minute, he’s a Dumocrat.’ That’s how I got the name.”

Hilarious, I know. Please try to hold down your drink, don’t spit out your food, contain your laughter, and don’t wake up your partner lying next to you in bed, and please, please ignore the crickets chirping as that punchline falls flat on its face. Flatter than the Earth is, according to some of the geodesy gurus living in our society. My almost three-year-olds can be more insulting than that. The audacity to call Hakeem Jeffries “low IQ” and then vomit those words immediately after is astonishing. Now this is not an endorsement of Jeffries. I call on Schumer and Jeffries to step down every single day. However, Hakeem Jeffries would run circles around Trump in a debate.

Now that we got the pedantics out of the way, let’s analyze the substance of this social post. A great place to start would be the indisputable lie at the end. “After decades”, Arizona is not “becoming a Republican state”. Over the last almost seventy years, Arizona has voted Republican in presidential elections with the lone exception of Bill Clinton in 1996. Republicans have had a stranglehold in the state legislature for decades as well. In fact, Arizona has only been a true battleground state in the last decade. Incidentally enough, during the exact time-frame of Donald Trump running for president. Donald Trump actually had the lowest margin of victory by a Republican (48.7% - to Clinton’s 45.1%) in the state’s history in 2016. He has made it a battleground. 

Finally, and most importantly, THESE WERE REPUBLICAN PRIMARIES. The president’s stupidity has me typing in all caps like him; that is how bad it is. Is anyone truly surprised that he does not understand how primaries and general elections work? Or the difference between them? Of course, Republicans running against other Republicans are going to win their primary. I mean, what are we doing here? You mean to tell me no Democrats won in a Republican primary? How can that be?! 

Against my best wishes, I am going to attempt to give Trump the benefit of the doubt here and assume he means his MAGA candidates and endorsed candidates won out. Which, yes, rings true for now (Arizona, what the hell are you doing?), but they still have to win in November. Sometimes Trump’s stupidity truly floors me. I should actually say, oftentimes his stupidity floors me, because this is a daily occurrence. We are not a serious country. The man at the highest elected position of our country does not understand primaries, elections, or how to spell. Even worse, his base will eat this up. He knows the vast majority of them do not understand the basic functions of government and elections. They will not bother to Google it and fact-check him either. His word is gospel.

The regression of our society makes me want to cry sometimes. Not in the “liberal tears” kind of way, but in the I am so frustrated that this many adults in this country find this man to be astute kind of way. It is so embarrassing as someone who is educated and as someone who really cares about these issues, our government, and the well-being of my fellow Americans. We must do better in 2028 and start washing our hands of this shameful, regressive, disconcerting Trump era. It will take decades to truly recover - if we ever do at all - and it starts in November of 2026. Get out and vote, and punish the people who punished us with this deplorable joke of a conman cloaked as a leader.
